Upstream is the debut album by Solar Unity Ensemble. Core members include Roope Niemelä, who performs on guitar, keyboard, double bass, electric bass, flute, clarinet, trumpet, violin, alto saxophone, piano, accordion, and percussion, and Henri Ijäs on soprano and tenor saxophones, piano, and percussion. Solar Unity Ensemble began taking shape when Henri Ijäs and Roope Niemelä met at a Finnish art school in 2014.

The album blends early acoustic recordings on A side with newer, more electric tracks on B side, embodying the duo’s exploration of open, improvisational soundscapes rather than structured songs. Regardless, the album sounds like a coherent one-piece suite. The music embraces the inherent uncertainty and openness of sonic exploration.
